Starting back in the mid-1800s "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" was a catchphrase used in the US by newspaper street vendors when selling extras. An extra edition is a special issue of a newspaper outside the normal publishing schedule to report on important or sensational news which arrived too late for the regular printing. Today digital technology allows for ready access and sharing of information.
